Polya's Problem Solving Method
I came across this book by George Polya How To Solve It, which is a math book, while studying math at university. I have found these principles apply to all kinds of learning including music. The idea is that any problem can be broken down into smaller pieces. Explore other similar problems. Then evaluate.
- Understand the problem
- Devise a plan
- Carry out the Plan
- Look back
Understand the problem
- Can you restate the problem?
- Do you know what the goal is?
- Is the problem similar to another problem you have solved?
Devise a plan
- Look for a pattern
- Make an orderly list
- Work backwards
Carry out the Plan
Try out the plan and persist until is is clear the plan isn't working.
Try another plan.
Look back
Evaluate on what you have done, how it worked, and what could be improved.
